2/1/93: NASA PRESENTS PUBLIC SERVICE MEDAL TO GENE RODDENBERRY
Don Savage
Headquarters, Washington, D.C. February 1, 1993
RELEASE: 93-019
Gene Roddenberry, creator of the Star Trek television series, posthumously
received NASA's Distinguished Public Service Medal on Jan. 30. The medal was
presented to his widow, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, by NASA Administrator Dan
Goldin in a ceremony at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in
Washington, D.C.
Roddenberry is credited with popularizing the exploration of space through
the original Star Trek television series, six motion pictures and the spin-off
television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. His vision of a positive
future for the human race, as well as the social and artistic content of the
series, have enjoyed enormous success and popularity since the original Star
Trek premiered on television in 1966.
The impact of his program was recognized in the U.S. space program as the
first Space Shuttle was named Enterprise after the spaceship in Star Trek. Many
people, including astronauts and others involved in the space program, cite
Star Trek as being an early influence on their lives.
The citation accompanying the medal reads: "For distinguished service to
the Nation and the human race in presenting the exploration of space as an
exciting frontier and a hope for the future."
Gene Roddenberry died in October 1991.

Mission Duration: 8 days 22 hours
Launch timeframe: NET Feb. 25
Landing site/timeframe: KSC/March 6
STS-55 IN WORK:
- orbiter weight and center of gravity determination
- install Columbia on orbiter transporter
STS-55 WORK COMPLETED:
- Spacelab D-2 closeouts
- Spacelab leak checks
- aft compartment closeouts
- aft compartment leak check
- payload bay door closure
- orbiter structural leak check
- avionics bay closeouts
- orbiter mid-body closeouts

- mate to the external tank/solid rocket booster stack Tuesday
- Shuttle Interface Test (SIT)
- rollout to Pad 39-A on Sunday at 8 a.m.
ISSUES AND CONCERNS: Engineers are evaluating data on the strength of a
titanium weld in the high pressure fuel turbopump on main engine number 3. A
decision on whether the pump should be changed will probably be made on
Tuesday. The work would be done in parallel with other work while Columbia is
in the Vehicle Assembly Building. The potential for schedule impact will be
assessed if the work is to be done.

tomorrow;
% Briefings on Spacelab D-2 experiments and rest of STS-55 mission set for
Wednesday;

over.
Astronauts John Casper, Donald McMonagle, Gregory Harbaugh, Susan Helms and
Mario Runco, Jr. will present a look at their on-orbit activities during their
recent shuttle mission-STS-54-at a press briefing this afternoon from the
Johnson Space Center. The STS-54 crew deployed the Tracking and Data Relay
Satellite-F and performed background X-ray astronomy scans using a Goddard
Space Flight Center payload. The briefing will begin at 4:00 pm EST and will
be shown live on NASA Select television.
Kennedy Space Center technicians working to prepare Columbia for its upcoming
STS-55 D-2 Spacelab mission report they will roll Columbia to the Vehicle
Assembly Building tomorrow evening, Feb. 2, for mating of the orbiter to its
external tank and solid rocket boosters.
Briefings on the mission objectives and science experiments will be held at the
Johnson Space Center this Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 3 and 4. The briefings
will be carried live on NASA Select television, and will begin at 9:30 am EST
on Wednesday.
KSC management will hold its launch readiness review on Monday, Feb. 8. The
NASA Office of Space Flight management's formal Flight Readiness Review will be
held at KSC on Wednesday, Feb. 11. The launch dress rehearsal with the
astronaut and ground launch team crews will take place on Feb. 11 and 12, with
the simulated launch time at 11:00 am EST on Feb. 12.
Preparations on Columbia are proceeding on a schedule which could allow the
launch of the STS-55 mission in late February. The STS-55 mission is the second
dedicated German research flight; the first was the D-1 mission which flew on
STS-61A in November 1985. This flight is scheduled as an 8-day and 22-hour,
seven- crewmember mission with the Spacelab long module and a variety of
scientific discipline investigations. This mission's major Spacelab facilities
will continue the exploration of fluid physics and human physiological changes
in microgravity. Additional experiments will continue the investigations of
the Earth's atmosphere, the surface topography of the planet, and include
additional investigations in galactic astronomy and technology development.

NASA announced on Friday that protests from EG&G Florida, Inc., BAMSI Inc., and
Westinghouse KSC Company, Inc., have been settled regarding the Kennedy Space
Center Base Operations Contract procurement. NASA had selected Lockheed Space
Operations Company last Nov. 17 for negotiations leading to award of the
contract. The three companies cited above filed protests on the procurement
action to the General Services Administration Board of Contract Appeals in
early December.
The settlement results from the finding that certain deficiencies occurred in
NASA's activities during the original proposal submission and discussion phase
of the procurement. This resulted in a deficiency in certain critical
information which remained unrequested and therefore unavailable to the source
evaluation board.
As part of the settlement, NASA will rescind the original selection and issue
an amendment to the Base Operations Contract solicitation. Each of the 4
competitors will then have the opportunity to submit a revised proposal. A
selection is expected to occur this summer.
